Apex Legends' Niche Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible This Season
Respawn Entertainment has an exciting surprise in store for the popular battle royale gamers, arriving just in time for the holidays. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to learn that a new movement mechanic is being implemented when Season 27: Amped goes live on November 4th.
Introducing Mantle Boosting
Named "Momentum Boosting" by the developers, this feature provides gamers a surge of propulsion when climbing over obstacles. As explained key developer the design lead, Mantle Boosting has unofficially existed of the game for some time, often called as "ledge boosting." However it's challenging for casual gamers, and is mainly used by competitive players in competitive play or tournaments. In this update, the team is making it easier for everyone to successfully perform these tricky movement boosts.
"This technique have been in Apex for some time, but the movement isn't easy to perform and a player might not realize it [is in the game] without external guides," Canavese explains. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so users can clearly identify when and how to trigger the fast-paced traversal skill, making accessible the feature and introducing fresh strategies to compete for more players."
Why Opening Up Advanced Mechanics
What's the reason for making a previously obscure movement quirk available to all players? Lead Legend designer the development lead says the team wants gamers to experience empowerment — even those who are new.
"Our community performs other crazy stuff like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we examined at other games, looked at what the community execute, and we wondered, 'How can we provide some of this power to a broader audience?'" the designer explains. "Because right now, some of these techniques are kind of janky to use — it requires to change controls and execute within one-frame windows. So we said, 'How about we make a polished implementation?'"
Season 27 Emphasis on Mobility
Mobility is largely the name of the game in Season 27, with Legends the gravity mage, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie receiving enhancements to maintain them in motion. Recovery time on her tactical ability has been decreased, and this skill will propel users into the air faster than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover feature overhead protection and the ability to provide speed boosts to allies in range. But it's the high-flying Valkyrie who's getting the most attention now, with various adjustments applied to enhance her as more potent, quicker, and more lethal.
"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time is here," states character developer the designer. "There's no doubt that she's been dominant previously, but due to the addition of other characters, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it felt like she fell behind in current the game. It was an ideal chance for us to revisit a bunch of aspects in her abilities and sort of bring her back to her glory days."
Enhancements to the Aerial Legend
To restore her competitive status in current strategies, the developer notes the team assessed each of her abilities and introduced significant changes. Her jetpack received improvements, boosting velocity during flight, and this equipment now recharge much quicker, enabling the player to remain longer in the air. Now she won't take damage from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to tag enemies who take damage from it. Her squad redeploy ability — which launches her entire squad into the air for redeployment or retreat — requires reduced delay to fire up. She's also getting some new perk choices that players can select to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her Missile Swarm, or further speed up her ultimate activation.
"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills the pilot experience," he says.
Olympus Improvements
Additionally, the only floating arena, Olympus, receives a movement-friendly facelift, with an extensive redesign that expands choke points and makes securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. Respawn says Apex Legends Season 27 focuses on providing gamers the resources required to keep up with the competition.
"Really, we examined Apex's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," explains lead Legend designer Josh Mohan.
The battle royale Season 27: Amped launches Nov. 4 at the specified times.
