Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence close to the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

All three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the site and another man who fled after the explosion was found soon after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area showed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, said the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the property owners.

Mediators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings triggered the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the residence, the minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had taken place on a floor above the doorway and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed local news, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
