Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
The former official stated he would step back from public duties after legislative body made public his repeated messages with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.

He stated in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate tracking their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who previously headed Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for alleged human trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it understood his decision to depart.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the directors," the company remarked.

Congressional Action

This news arrives after the entire Congress of Congress voted on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would compel the US justice department to disclose its documents on Epstein.

The measure will then move to the desk of the White House for endorsement. The President has said he intends to endorse the bill, after modifying his position on the subject following objections from his base.

Message Details

A collection of Epstein-connected messages made public by the legislative panel last week included multiple high-profile figures in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.

The communications revealed that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with he often attempting to link Summers to notable international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the emails were made available with the public, he stated he took "full responsibility for my misguided choice to maintain interacting with Mr Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to restore confidence and mend relationships with the people most important to me".

Professional History

The professor served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He headed the institution from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments previously on this week, he said he would continue his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive policy institute in DC where he was a senior fellow, verified that he was no longer associated with the group.

The former official became part of the directorate of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its CEO the company leader.
